Audio software for batch processing

you guys should know about this more than I do..
anyone knows of any good audio software that I can use to edit/encode audio files and offers the possibility to do batch processing (encoding)?
am not looking for some high-end products (don't think paying tens of thousands of dollars is an option here).. but something decently priced would be good
any advices, recommendations?

hi Omar,
there used to be great tools to do this on os 9...most of the higher
end editors will do it (Peak, for example). Here is a package which is quite good (albeit expensive):

How extensive (I.e., how many and
what formats do you need to process?)
